Scientific American and the Earth Institute at Columbia University present “conversations on innovative approaches to a healthy world” in the fall 2010 publication Lives: New Answers for Global Health, which follows the New Answers for Global Health Conference.

Lives addresses a variety of pressing global health topics, including palliative care, chronic diseases, vaccines, nursing, and access to clean water. It also features a section titled “Inspiring Lives” which profiles the work of nine “sung and unsung” global health “heroes” – two of whom are involved in GHDonline communities: Sandeep (Sunny) Kishore and Rajesh Panjabi, MD, MPH.

Sunny is an MD-PhD student and founder of the Young Professionals Chronic Disease Working Group (YPCDWG) which uses a private community on GHDonline to formulate recommendations on key topics leading up to the 2011 Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) Summit, especially: determining NCD indicators for the 2015 Millennium Development Goals, enabling access to essential medicines, and developing a global social movement on NCD. The community is private for now but opened to anyone interested in exchanging ideas and resources around these and other NCD issues so click here to learn more and send an email to YPCDWG@ghdonline.org if you’d like to join!

A resident physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and executive director of the community-based NGO Tiyatien Health in Liberia, Raj is a member of several public and private communities on GHDonline (YPCDWG and Clinical Exchange) and one of his many interests is how best to deliver HIV and complex disease care in rural settings.
