Aaron C. Beals is Director of Product Development. What keeps him up at night are the challenges of information access, which he first tackled in software engineering and product management roles at local startups Netezza and Endeca. For the last 4 years at GHD, he has been working to integrate information access theory with online communities of practice — Aaron leads the team behind GHDonline.org in helping health delivery professionals share and access the knowledge they need to deliver better care. Aaron graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. Aaron on GHDonline.org
Sophie G. Beauvais is communications and web content manager. As such, she is managing editor of the GHD website and blog and focuses on content, community and strategic partnerships with organizations like UpToDate, Inc., PATH, HINARI (World Health Organization), or Journal Watch for GHDonline.org. She comes to GHD with ten years of experience in global communications, managing public relations for the healthcare industry, major events such as a VIP tours for the Young Presidents Organization, and award-winning publications both in the U.S. and in France. She holds a Masters in Information and Communications Science from La Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, France. Sophie on GHDonline.org
In addition to his role at GHD where he developed and teaches the South Africa tobacco control case study, Asaf Bitton, MD, faculty adviser, is a General Medicine Clinical and Research Fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and practices at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates clinic. His past work has centered on understanding the diabetes and obesity epidemic in the Samoan Islands, and how to utilize community health workers to improve chronic disease care in American Samoa. He served as temporary technical adviser on tobacco control in Europe to the WHO, is a member of the Harvard Tobacco Control Policy Group, and studies models of primary care reform including the patient-centered medical home. Dr. Bitton graduated from Brown University, University of California San Francisco Medical School, and completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. For the past four years, Marie Connelly has been working at the intersection of health care and social media, building active and engaged online communities. Marie joins GHD as community manager for GHDonline.org. Most recently, she served as the Community Director for WEGO Health, an online community dedicated to empowering and connecting online patient opinion leaders. When she’s not online, Marie can usually be found working towards her goal of reading 52 books this year, searching out new local music, or indulging her addiction to British television. Marie has a Bachelor’s in English from Boston College. Marie on GHDonline.org
Andy Ellner, MD, is director of the Program in Global Primary Care and Social Change at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an associate physician in the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also practices at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates clinic and teaches medicine at HMS. His previous research centered on essential drug policy and health care access in the United States, and he served as Clinical Policy Director for the Clinton Foundation Rural Initiative. At GHD, Andy managed the academic consortium for the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives. His current work focuses on improving health systems for underserved populations. Andy is a Harvard Medical School graduate and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also earned a Master of Science in Health Policy, Planning, and Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Andy on GHDonline.org
As a student at Wellesley College, Yue Guan worked with international development organizations in Ghana, Peru, and the Philippines. Yue joins GHD as project assistant for GHDonline.org and is excited to contribute to the development of a platform that facilitates documentation and dissemination of best practices by health care implementers in resource-limited settings. Amy Judd, faculty adviser, joined the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital shortly after it was created in 2003 as Director of Program Development. There, she helped launch the Hiatt Global Health Equity residency, a physician volunteer program with the Indian Health Service, and from the outset managed the Partners In Health Russia-based MDR-TB training and research programs funded by the Eli Lilly Foundation, a $1 million annual grant that was recently extended through 2010. Her prior experience includes eleven years at Massachusetts General Hospital. Amy is an ’81 Harvard School of Public Health alum. Amy on GHDonline.org
Amy Scheffler, staff assistant II, recently completed her undergraduate studies in International Affairs, Human Services, Health Sciences, and Sociology at Northeastern University. During her time at Northeastern, she had the opportunity to study community health and development in Kenya, and social conflict and negotiation in Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, and Croatia. The combination of her global studies and her internship at Northeastern University’s Health and Counseling Services, heightened her interest in efficient, effective, and equitable global health care delivery. Julie Rosenberg Talbot, MPH, senior case writer, contributes to several case studies and has worked on the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives project, on the Partners In Health White paper Stemming the Tide of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis: Major Barriers to Addressing the Growing Epidemic, on an appendix to the Institute of Medicine report Addressing the Threat of Drug Resistant TB: A Realistic Assessment of the Challenges. Prior to GHD, Julie worked in clinical research at Emory School of Medicine and in community-based nonprofit organizations in Latin America and the U.S. Julie has an MPH in epidemiology and global health from Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and a Bachelor’s from Harvard College. Aaron VanDerlip, works as an integral member of the GHDonline team as a Software Engineer. Prior to joining GHD, Aaron worked as a Web Developer for Oxfam America and as Developer/Project Manager for Jazkarta, a company that develops websites and web applications using open source technologies. Aaron holds a BSc (Hons) in Sociology from Portland State University and has completed Post-Bach studies in Computer Science from Southern Oregon University. Aaron on GHDonline.org
Keri Wachter, project coordinator, joins GHD after assisting the Health and Human Rights Journal and OpenForum blog at Harvard’s FXB Center. Previously, she interned with the Aspen Institute’s Health, Biomedical Science and Society program and spent time in South Africa conducting research and advocacy on women’s health and justice issues. Keri completed her undergraduate studies at Columbia University. Keri on GHDonline.org
