As a GHD case writer, Sarah Arnquist, MPH, is developing curriculum to evaluate strategy and implementation of large-scale HIV prevention programs. Before earning her Master’s in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Sarah worked as a journalist reporting on public health issues. Her work has appeared in the New York Times and other publications. She grew up in rural Minnesota and completed her undergraduate degrees in journalism and Spanish at the University of St. Thomas. Sarah on GHDonline.org

Aaron C. Beals, director of product development, came to GHD from the Boston software start-up scene, having worked for two major local companies that both build search and data analysis products. After graduating with a degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Aaron joined Netezza and developed software with the engineering team and in the office of the CTO for several years. He then joined Endeca where he did both software development and technical product management. Aaron on GHDonline.org

Before joining GHD as communications and web content manager, Sophie G. Beauvais led communications strategies and public relations campaigns for various non- and for-profit organizations. Past projects include revamping the corporate website for Vinfen, a leading human services provider in Massachusetts where she received the Awards of Excellence for External Periodicals and for Corporate Brand Identity by the New England Society for Healthcare Communications for The Vinfen Voice newsletter; co-creating Santepress.com; and managing campaigns at Capital Image, an independent health care PR firm. She holds a Master’s in Information and Communication Sciences from the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III. Sophie on GHDonline.org

In addition to his role at GHD where he developed and teaches the South Africa tobacco control case study, Asaf Bitton, M.D., faculty adviser, is a General Medicine Clinical and Research Fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and practices at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates clinic. His past work has centered on understanding the diabetes and obesity epidemic in the Samoan Islands, and how to utilize community health workers to improve chronic disease care in American Samoa. He served as temporary technical adviser on tobacco control in Europe to the WHO, is a member of the Harvard Tobacco Control Policy Group, and studies models of primary care reform including the patient-centered medical home. Dr. Bitton graduated from Brown University, University of California San Francisco Medical School, and completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Asaf on GHDonline.org

Claire B. Cole, MPH is a case writer focusing on large-scale HIV prevention programs in resource-poor settings. Prior to GHD, Claire worked as researcher and project manager of a year-long study on population control policies in northwestern India in which she provided strategic analysis to a national coalition seeking to combat Two-Child Norm policies while refocusing government attention to improving health care access. Her research was used to organize and commemorate the fifteen-year anniversary of the International Convention on Population and Development in Cairo. Claire has an extensive background in reproductive justice, women’s leadership, and health and rights organizing. She received her Masters of Public Health from the University of Washington where she focused on Community-oriented Public Health Practice. Claire on GHDonline.org

Nayana Dhavan comes to GHD with experience in designing and conducting qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research on public health programs and policy in the U.S., Mexico and India. Her work includes research on a variety of global health issues such as trafficking of women, health of displaced populations, emergency contraception, refugee mental health, and substance abuse among youth. She received her Master’s of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health with a concentration in Women, Gender, and Health, and a Bachelor’s in General Biology and Linguistics from the University Michigan at Ann Arbor. At GHD, Nayana has been conducting research on the impact of Global Health Initiatives on country health systems and previously worked on the WHO Maximizing Positive Synergies project. Andy Ellner, M.D. is an associate physician in the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, practices at the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates clinic, and is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. His previous research centered on essential drug policy and health care access in the United States, and he served as Clinical Policy Director for the Clinton Foundation Rural Initiative. At GHD, Andy managed the academic consortium for the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives, and his current work focuses on improving health systems for underserved populations. Andy is a Harvard Medical School graduate and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also earned a Master of Science in Health Policy, Planning, and Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Andy on GHDonline.org

Prior to joining GHD, Julia Fischer-Mackey worked in the renewable energy field researching financial and policy issues and managing industry conferences. Julia also has experience providing financial services for the poor, facilitating remittances for immigrants in the Washington DC area. She holds a Master’s in Environment, Development and Policy from the University of Sussex (UK), and a Bachelor’s in History of Africa and Latin America from Brown University. At GHD, Julia is focusing on the PATH collaboration, focusing on expanding the reach and content of the GHDonline TB communities. Julia on GHDonline.org

As a student at Wellesley College, Yue Guan worked with international development organizations in Ghana, Peru, and the Philippines. Yue joins GHD as project assistant for GHDonline.org and is excited to contribute to the development of a platform that facilitates documentation and dissemination of best practices by health care implementers in resource-limited settings.

After graduating from Trinity University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s in Sociology, International Studies, and French, Amy House worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the Boston office of Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline, a cooking and nutrition education program for low-income families. Upon completion of her VISTA year, Amy volunteered at Partners In Health before joining GHD where she started as an Administrative Assistant before taking on the role of GHDonline Communities Coordinator. Now a case writer, Amy is conducting research on the interaction between disease programs and health systems in Latin American and the Caribbean.  Amy on GHDonline.org

Amy Judd, faculty adviser, joined the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital shortly after it was created in 2003 as Director of Program Development. There, she helped launch the Hiatt Global Health Equity residency, a physician volunteer program with the Indian Health Service, and from the outset managed the Partners In Health Russia-based MDR-TB training and research programs funded by the Eli Lilly Foundation, a $1 million annual grant that was recently extended through 2010. Her prior experience includes eleven years at Massachusetts General Hospital. Amy is an ’81 Harvard School of Public Health alum. Amy on GHDonline.org

After graduating from Harvard College in 2006 with a degree in Sociology, Maria May taught English in China and subsequently completed a Harvard Center for Public Interest Careers Fellowship with the National Quality Center AIDS Institute housed at the New York State Health Department. At GHD, Maria worked on case studies focusing on tuberculosis programs in Bangladesh and in Zambia, on health information technology in Rwanda, and on interactions between targeted funding and national health systems in Rwanda as part of the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives project. While an undergraduate at Harvard College, Ugochi Nwosu concentrated in Molecular and Cellular Biology and gained experience mainly in basic science research settings. Through her secondary concentration in African Studies and a previous internship in the international division of John Snow Inc., she developed an interest in global public health. As a GHD research assistant, she is excited to work to increase knowledge to improve delivery of effective and efficient health care in resource-poor settings.

Kileken Ole-MoiYoi, case writer, focuses on malaria and the role of public-private partnerships in global health and on developing curricula for executive education programs. He recently managed research in Kenya for the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives project. Prior to GHD, he worked at TechnoServe, a Washington DC-based international development organization, and with Community Centered Conservation in the Comoros, integrating economic development with conservation efforts to improve marine park management and train community members on alternative income generation activities. While double majoring at Brown University (Political Economy of Development; Human Biology), he wrote an honors thesis on integrating sustainable economic development with malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa and co-founded EduVision, a Zurich-based organization that develops technologies to improve education in developing countries. Kileken on GHDonline.org

Julie Rosenberg Talbot, MPH senior case writer, contributes to several case studies and has worked on the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives project, on the Partners In Health White paper Stemming the Tide of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis: Major Barriers to Addressing the Growing Epidemic, on an appendix to the Institute of Medicine report Addressing the Threat of Drug Resistant TB: A Realistic Assessment of the Challenges. Prior to GHD, Julie worked in clinical research at Emory School of Medicine and in community-based nonprofit organizations in Latin America and the U.S. Julie has an MPH in epidemiology and global health from Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and a Bachelor’s from Harvard College. Julie on GHDonline.org

Anat Rosenthal, Ph.D., is a medical anthropologist and a Fulbright research fellow in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has conducted fieldwork in Israel and Malawi on the social and cultural effects of AIDS, health policy, and undocumented migration, and also worked with the Israeli AIDS Task force on developing prevention and care programs for undocumented migrant populations. Her current research focuses on the impact of AIDS on kinship systems and social institutions, and on the impact of ART roll-out on clients and health professionals in rural Malawi. She received her PhD in Anthropology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her published work focuses on migration and health, and health policy and AIDS care. Bobby Shady graduated from Brown University in 2008 with degrees in Human Biology and Development Studies. Following graduation he completed a year of AmeriCorps service as a part of the “Residency in Social Enterprise” Program of the nonprofit firm New Sector Alliance and worked in Strategic Planning and Program Development for the start-up social enterprise Charity Partners, Inc. He has also worked with the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative in Papua New Guinea, the Johns Hopkins/NIH Minorities in Global Health Disparities Internship program in Cape Town, South Africa, and in a pathology laboratory at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Erin Sullivan, Ph.D., research associate, conducts research projects and contributes to teaching materials, notably on Tuberculosis, Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission, and supply chain management. She also helped develop a multi-method research strategy for the World Health Organization Maximizing Positive Synergies between Health Systems and Global Health Initiatives project, and served as Faculty Mentor for the Fall 2009 G-Lab GHD. She received her PhD in Business Studies at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, with a dissertation focused on the impact of research and development on the pharmaceutical supply chain. She previously served as a researcher for the Institute for International Integration Studies at Trinity College Dublin, Visiting PhD Fellow at Copenhagen Business School, and Research Assistant and Consultant at Harvard Business School. Erin on GHDonline.org

Keri Wachter, project coordinator, joins GHD after assisting the Health and Human Rights Journal and OpenForum blog at Harvard’s FXB Center. Previously, she interned with the Aspen Institute’s Health, Biomedical Science and Society program and spent time in South Africa conducting research and advocacy on women’s health and justice issues.
